And how did we get started?.........

BELIEVE IT OR NOT -  We got started in Triathlon on a bet - in 1983 the first local Kansas City triathlon was held. Baptist Memorial Hospital

sponsored an event at Raintree Lake. We had been swimming at the YMCA, bicycling for fun with the kids on the back of the bikes, and

running for fitness. Kathi looked at me and said "bet you can't do that!" I looked at her and said "bet you can't either!" and it was a done deal.

You can't back down from a challenge like that. Kind of like the triple dog dare thing.

But in 1983, there was no triathlon magazine, no triathlon clubs, no USAT, no websites for unlimited information (actually, no internet or no

PC's except for our Commodore 64), no coaches -

So then the reality set in and we looked at each other and said how are we going to do this? 0.8 miles open water swim sounds like a really

long way. You couldn't even see the turn around buoys from the shore! The bikes we were riding were bought at K-mart, weighed at least 80

pounds (it seems), with no spare tubes, no C02 cartridges, no hydration systems, fat clinchers, and no aero bars.

It was fine day for a race - clear, sunny, and over 100 degrees!

Hydration? What was that?

Fuel, huh?

Transitions?

Pacing?     Nutrition?       Training?        Just put in the miles and yards.

Oh my, what a difference from then to now.

Yep things are different for the sport now, different for the area races and athletes!

And we know what it means to complete your first Triathlon, or your first Olympic distance Tri, or your first Ironman.

We know what it takes to work your training into a family and work schedule.

You don't have to spend years learning what you need to know ------
